CCR Rule Compliance Data and Information

PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, headquartered in Andalusia, Alabama, is a generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative providing the wholesale power needs of 20 distribution members who provide service throughout 39 Alabama and 10 Florida counties. In 1941, PowerSouth was formed by 11 cooperatives to generate and sell electricity. First known as Alabama Electric Cooperative (AEC), our name was changed to PowerSouth Energy Cooperative in 2008 to better reflect our geographical service territory and to position the company for future growth opportunities.

Prior to AEC’s formation in 1941, the rural Alabama lifestyle was decades behind flourishing urban centers. A diminutive four percent of Alabama farms had electricity during this time. Not only did the lack of electricity hamper existing farm operations in these rural areas, but future prosperity was prevented due to business and industry’s reluctance to locate in areas where no electricity was available. A viable source of electricity, which was soon provided by AEC, was desperately needed. Today, as one of 62 G&T cooperative in the United States, PowerSouth remains a trusted energy provider for nearly a million consumer-owners in Alabama and northwest Florida.

With a combined generating capacity of more than 2,000 megawatts, PowerSouth owns and operates six generation facilities and holds ownership interest in an additional facility. Utilizing a diverse generating mix that includes natural gas, coal, water (hydro), and compressed air energy storage technology minimizes the impact of significant fuel cost increases. The generation portfolio also includes renewable energy purchased from Waste Management’s landfill gas generating station near Campbellton, Florida, and the Story County Wind Farm in Iowa. A disciplined fuel supply hedging program and long-term purchased power agreements reduce PowerSouth’s exposure to volatile fuel markets, and helps to ensure an economically stable and reliable power supply for our members.

PowerSouth’s workforce of nearly 600 men and women at nine locations sets the bar for excellence in our industry, boasting an impressive safety record. Although safety is our core value, PowerSouth also strives to collaborate with national, regional and state leaders to educate the public about environmental issues and concerns affecting our area and industry. We are constantly working to remain a positive environmental steward of all our natural resources while ensuring reliable and feasible power generation and distribution to the diverse communities we serve.
